Swim Instructor

Department: City of Marion, HUB Recreation Center

Reports To: Pool Manager

Pay Classification:  Part-time Non-Exempt (Non IMRF- under 1000 hours annually)

 
Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator.  Work involves swim safety instruction, athlete training guidance, and mentoring of facility USA swim team members. Work is reviewed for conformance to generally accepted standards of aquatic center operations, and for compliance with the established policies of Illinois Local Swimming Committee, the City of Marion, and the HUB Recreation Center.
  ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
·         Provides coaching guidance for stroke improvement, conditioning, and technique for the maintenance and enhancement of competition performance achievement

·         Assists in the conduction of education and training sessions for the team and HUB facility

·         Educates individuals and groups on water safety principles, practices and techniques

·         Conducts swim tests and level orientations for appropriate swim level placement to facilitate learning

·         Keeps adequate record of swim lessons obtained and swim lessons taught.

·         Delivers request for private lesson payment under direction of Pool Manager/Aquatics Coordinator

·         Interprets and maintains policies and procedures to the public, on site or by telephone

·         Attends staff meetings and training sessions to enhance job performance

 EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience Required

Minimum 1 year of swimming experience. Knowledge of all swim strokes and swim lesson practices.  Completion and maintenance of formal learn to swim instructor certification (Water Safety Instructor) by the American Red Cross.

 

Education and Experience Preferred

Completion and maintenance of formal lifeguard training and certification by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized lifeguarding program (minimally certified in cpr).   

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:
·         Knowledge of swim center rules and regulations

·         Knowledge of principles of hydrodynamics including buoyancy, resistance, drag, turbulence, inertia, surface tension, hydrostatic pressure, and the influences of body position and equipment in the aquatic environment

·         Knowledge of teaching strategies and awareness of individual student need

·         Knowledge of standard water safety principles, first aid principles and practices

·         Considerable skill as a swimmer.

·         Ability to teach swimming skills to aquatic center guests and students of all ages

·         Knowledge of aquatic environment and HUB aquatic center procedures

·         Ability to communicate effectively in interpreting policies and procedure

·         Good communications skills

 PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Environment:

The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free.  Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud. Exposure to chlorinated water for periods of time up to 5 hours per day.

·         Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool and instructional equipment.
·         Visual, hearing and speaking skills to coach and communicate effectively with swimmers, parents and coaches.
·         Sitting, swimming, and / or standing for extended periods of time.
